Seymour Farmers Market began the summer of 2000. We are a non-profit organization with the mission of keeping agriculture part of the Seymour community's heritage by encouraging gardening and small farming.
Membership is open to all in the community who support this mission. Annual membership fee is $5/individual or family
Members are encouraged to contribute by doing one or more of the following on a yearly basis:
1. Helping with the educational activities
2. Assisting with the operation of the summer market
Educational activities
1. Gardening classes
Held from January thru March, in the Seymour branch library, these free classes offer information for both beginning and advanced gardeners. Programs include speakers and sharing of learned experiences from attenders.
2. Maintaining the community garden at Seymour library
Rebuilt in 2022 after the library expansion, this garden features 3 beds. The central bed is a pollinator garden. The garden is designed to provide an opportunity for kids to learn about vegetables & gardening, and be a demonstration area for the gardening classes.
3. Seed library at Seymour Branch Library
Our member Jackie Hardin has started a seed library that is accessible to the public at the Seymour Branch library. This library provides free seeds to any one who desires to grow them. This is an excellent way to keep heirloom plants from being lost. If the seeds you grow are open-pollinated (not hybrids), you can save seeds from the plants to return to the seed library. We provide information on how to save seeds.
Mayo Seed Company, Baker Seed Company, and Seed Saver Exchange have generously donated seeds to this effort. To make this sustainable, we encourage gardeners in our community to contribute seeds from their crops on a yearly basis.
For more information check Facebook page Seymour Seed Library.
Summer Farmers Market
Visit this heading(above) for more information about the market.
We sponsor the Saturday markets to encourage farmers and gardeners in our community by providing a venue for them to sell produce they have grown.
These markets also function as a means to build friendships, share agricultural knowledge and develop community relationships in our area made up of three counties and a diverse population.
Guidelines and operational policies for these markets are decided at our annual membership meeting in April.
